Joseph E. Aoun, a leader in higher education policy and a renowned scholar in linguistics, is the seventh President of Northeastern University.
President Aoun has strategically aligned the University’s research enterprise with three global imperatives—health, security, and sustainability. Northeastern’s faculty focus on interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, and transforming academic research into commercial solutions for the world’s most pressing problems. During President Aoun’s tenure, the University has realized a 189 percent growth in external research funding, along with approximately 1,500 patent applications filed by faculty and students.
Black Motherhood through the Lens, filmed and produced by Dr. Adeiyewunmi (Ade) Osinubi, is an award-winning documentary film about four Black women's experiences navigating the reproductive and maternal healthcare system from conception to postpartum. The women in this film have experienced miscarriage, lack of access to infertility care, fears about childbirth, and postpartum depression. It features the stories of Shaylene, Shannon, Ijeoma, and Jai-Me, who despite these challenges, boldly pursued their dreams of Black motherhood. The film has been accepted to seven film festivals, winning "Best Short Collective" at the 2021 Rhode Island Black Film Festival and has been featured in Forbes, PBS, the Washington Post, among other places.
